SEED - NO-SEED DIFFERENCES FOR 3-HOURLY
PRECIPITATION (MM/3 HR) BY AVERAGE GROUPS VS. 1l0URS
BEFORE AND AFTER SYSTEM PASSAGE. '

18

considerable variation from
case to case, with some
cases having largely wan~
tops, and other cases largely
cold tops. These latter
cases should not have beEm
called experimental days
according to the criteria.

The cloud top averages
exhibited minor differences
between the seeded and illl-
seeded samples and these
differences can be expected
in the light of limited num-
ber of cases making up the
composites; therefore, the
seeded case figure has not
been included in this
presentation.

I
-9

Averages of observed
seed - no-seed group prec~pi-
tation differences in rela-
tion to hours before and
after system passage were
computed and are shown mapped
out in Figure 11. All upwind
groups, crest groups, and
downwind groups have been
averaged so that a single
average profile is
represented~ The
differences are not
corrected for randomi-
zation bias and no
analysis of their sta-
tistical significance
has been made. The
following interprative
comments are based on
application of physical
principles. It is seen
that a severe deficit
appears just ahead of
the system but that at
zero hour excesseS
occur across the entire
barrier. The pre-
system passage deficits
are expected and should
be the result of two
factors; 1) the excess
