3

3. A delivery mechanism for the AgI. It must be possible to deliver

adequate quantities of the seeding material to an appropriate location in

the cloud~ such that the resulting ice will convert water to precipitation

that would have been lost othenvise.

4. Sufficient residence time. If a specific target location is being

considered (as in the San Juans~ where the target area was ~vest of the

Continerital Divide)~ the transport~ diffusion~ nucleation, and growth pro-

cesses must have sufficient time to operate. As we shall see, this may be

a serious problem in the San Juan Mountains.

Section II of this report discusses the data obtained and utilized for

this study. Included in this section is a table of the flight periods, and

the stage of storm development during those flights.

Section III is a general discussion of our results. We present here

the basic conclusions~ with illustrations chosen frOTIl our case studies and

~vith generalizations drawn from all the cases. This section includes a dis-

cussion on the general storm structure and airflow patterns, the regions of

supercooled water in these storms, the ice crystal concentrations~ and the

characteristics of the AgI transport and diffusion. We also present our

assessment of the seedability of the San Juan storms in this section.

Section IV includes a discussion of some of the aircraft instrumentation.

This section is included because several of the instruments used were ne\v and

there is little literature to which to refer for performance characteristics.

Also, some of the data analysis techniques were developed specifically for

this research. A brief discussion of some conventional instruments is in-

cluded because certain of their characteristics are important in interpreting

the data presented.

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I'
I
I
I
I
