~~,

3.1.3 Benchma~k Project Area - The Benchmark project area located in the
I

Park Range east of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, was the second area :in

Northern Colorado where meteorological data were collected by WSSI in

connection with the Colorado River Basin Pilot Project. This observation

network was initiated in the Fall of 1969 and was operated for four

consecutive winter seasons.

Instrumentation operated by WSSI in the Benclunark area consisted of three

recording precipitation gages with resolutions of 0.01 inch located

along Highway 40 west of Rabbit Ears Passt one expansion type ice nucleus

counter installed just west of the pass at the highway patrol station,

and one mountaintop wind recording system installed on the slopes of the

Steamboat ski area on Mount Werner. Two additional daily precipitation

measurement sites operated by the National Weather Service were also included

in this observation network. Cumulative precipitation readings were lnade

at these two NWS sites around 1700 local time. All of these data

collection sites are listed in Table 10 and shown in Figure 5. Table 10

gives the type of instrumentation, site ID, site name, observing agency,

site location, and seasons operated.

3.2 Site Selection

A large fraction of the first season's work from November, 1968 through

early May, 1969, was devoted to designing a network of measurement sites

which would allow evaluations of the effects of future weather modification

operations and to develop identifiable precipitation patterns within the

project areas. The most extensive network of sampling stations involved

-27-

I'
