~';

r
I
~

~

Figure 1 provides a map of the United States with the number of acti-
vities listed for each year in the app1:icab1e states. The preponderance
of activity in areas west of the Mississippi River is apparent. In all
3 years, a few projects crossed State boundaries, for example, in the
adjoining States of California and Nevada.

Purpose of Activity

The activities undertaken in the past 3 years had several purposes ~lS
shown in table 4. Many activities had .2 objectives, rain enhancement
and hail alleviation. Efforts to increase precipitation, either as r~lin-
fall or snowfall, were predominant in all 3 years; operational precipita-
tion augmentation accounted for an increasingly large percentage of acti-
vities (over 70 percent in 1977 and 1978). Projects to suppress hail
decreased in CY 1978, and the number of fog modification activities dE!-
c1ined dramatically over the 3-year period.

Techniques and Apparatus

Table 5 lists most of the reported methods used for seeding clouds nnd
fog. Ground-based silver iodide (AgI) generators or burners for predLpi-
tation enhancement were either liquid-fueled with acetone and propane or
the arc-type. Other ground equipment included (1) liquid propane emitted
as vapor from masts to suppress fog and (2) pyrotechnic AgI flares fr(~
which the tiny AgI smoke particles were to be carried into the clouds by
the wind.

Table 4.--Purpose of weather modification activities

Purpose* CY 1976 CY 1977 CY JL978
Increase precipitation 43 76 ~)O
Alleviate hail 9 9 5
Clear fog 16 10 5
Research/tests 6 4 9

*Many activities had two purposes, such as rain increase and hail
alleviation.

9
