I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

diffusion conditions for ground-released seeding and also have
unsafe flying conditions for aircraft seeding.
Sites would be selected for manually-controlled, ground-
based generators with elevations that will be as far above the
mean elevation of the valley floor as practical while still
providing the desired plume coverage over the seeded area.
Wherever satisfactory sites could not be found for manually-
controlled generators, remotl3ly-controlled, ground-based generators
would be located in the upper regions of the foothills upwind of
the seeded area.
The placement concept of the ground-based generator network
would be such that the sites would be approximately 15 to 20 miles
upwind of the first priminen"c ridge in the primary seeding area.
The distribution of remote generators with respect to the manual
generators would be in a pat"tern that would allow the remote net-
work to operate separately under marginal surface wind and low-
level stable air conditions 'Nhen most of the manual system would
have unsatisfactory atmospheric dispersing conditions for the
nuclei released.
Figure 6 indicates the proposed locations of the ground-based
generators for this program. Twenty-five of the 38 generators in
the total network are manually-controlled sites. The remaining 13
generators are remotely-controlled sites.
It is proposed that these generators have a variable seed rate
capability. At least two and quite possibly three seed rates would
be desirable. If two rates are selected, the rates of 5 and 20
grams of silver iodide appear to be the most compatible with the
types of cloud systems expec1:ed over this region of Colorado. If
three rates are desired, then the rates of 6, 12 and 18 would best
fit the expected cloud condi1:ions. In the case of both the two or
three rate capabilities, only two set solution flow meters would be
required for the remote sites as the third setting is simply a
combination of the first two rates.
At least three aircraft are proposed for this program for the
aircraft seeding efforts. This number of aircraft should provide
the necessary plume continui1:y for effective seeding.

-27-
