F ACI.LITIES AND EQUIPMENT

The field facility h<;l.s headquarters in Steamboat Springs, Colorado,
and leases a portion of the building that houses the U. S. Forest Service,
Figure 9. The offices include a meteorological room with Service A and C
weather teletype, the project engineer's office, and a data reduction area.

Laboratory facilities are located at Valley View Lodge, 8 miles from
Steamboat Springs and at an altitude of 7600 feet, Figure lO. Mechanical
and electrical construction is done in the 500 square foot laboratory, envi-
ronmental testing in the one-acre pasture behind the lab, and particle detec-
tion in a separate cabin which serves as a. "clean room. "

Ten of our personnel, and their families, are stationed in Steamboat
Springs.

Transportation is provided by two four-wheel drive Jeep station-
wagons, and two four-wheel drive Carryall trucks. One of these trucks is
outfitted with a trailer to carry the Tucker Sno Cat over open roads. In the
winter season, the Sno Cat is needed to reach all ridge stations and the Emer-
ald Mountain diffusion and artificial nuclei generator te st station, Figure 11.
Our company leases sensor sites at the laboratory, Milner, Mad Creek,
Emerald Mountain and Lufkin from private individuals; the Bureau of Recla-
mation leases the Mt. Harris radar site.

In the following description of specific equipment, you will find it con-
venient to refer to Figure 6 for geographical locations.

PARTICLE DETECTION EQUIPMENT

Zinc-cadmium sulfide, FP 2267, i.s used as the tracer material for
diffusion tests. Dispensing is done from Emerald Mountain and the plume is
tracked by an aircraft mounted sensor, Figure 12. The aircraft for these
tests was provided by the National Center for Atmospheric Research in con-
sequence of a mutual interest in the diffusion results.

- J 5 -
