I

I,

1159 when the first weak signal from the second pulse was found near the Oak
Creek Junction. There was essentially no signal for at least 20 minutes be-
tween the pulses. The silver iodide generator was left operating continuous-

I

I

1y from 1140 to 1313 and at 1247 at eleven thousand feet a six mile width
plume was measured at a distance of fourteen nautical miles. The plume
from the first pulse was much wider at closer distances to the release site
than the second pulse.

I

I

NUCLEI GENERATOR DAT A

I

Silver iodide particle s we re generated at the Emerald Mountain site
by modified hi-output Skyfire-type2 generators on a one cycle/hour schedule,
The generators,. on location, are shown in Figure 54. They are nominally
ope rated at a flow rate of 1. 2 gal/hr of 4% AgI-NaI- acetone solution and 10-
12 psi of propane. This is equivalent to 0.04 g AgI/sec. Two of the four
units used were calibrated at Colorado State University. The results are
given in Figure 55.

I

I

(I

I

Table X gives a synopsis of the generator operations and Table XI a
complete history of generator operating times. There were very few mal-
functions; the most frequent one (which was not really a malfunction) was the
loss of propane pressure due to an empty tank, and this was easily remedied.
Near the end of the season, a flow meter was connected to the generators
and it verified the average flow rate shown in Table X. The flow was found
to be extremely dependent upon the nozzle setting--a slight adjustment would
change the flow by 50-80%. Flow meters will be used during the coming sea-
son to regulate the gene rator output.

I

I

I

I

The logistics of supporting these generators is a problem. In the
winte r, the site can only be reached by a half- hour trip in an over-the- snow

I

I

2
Fuquay, D.
