I

I

I

1. INT RODUC TION

I

The Park Range Atmospheric Water Resources Progra.m, located
at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Figure 1, has been operated for the
Bureau of Reclamation by E. Bollay Associates, Inc. for three years. This
report describes the results of FY66 and FY67 operations under Contract
14-06-D-5640, with particular emphasis on the progress made during
FY67. ':~

I

I

I

The basic purpose of the Park Range Program is to develop the
technology of weather modification for precipitation increase or redistri-
bution -- especially as it applies to potential operations on winter oro-
graphic precipitation in the Colorado River Basin. The goal has been to
obtain useful indicators of artificial cloud nucleation effects in as short

I

I

a time as po s sible. It is inhe rent in such an approach that primary mea.~
surements have to be made frequently with a relatively dense network, and
be supported by physical measurements that aim at a usable description
of precipitation dynamic s and the factor s that affect them.

I

I

I

The program has been searching for answers to the f.ollowing
major que stions:

I

o

under what meteorological conditions is artificial
nucleation (seeding) of clouds effecti Ie ?

I

o

un de r what meteorological conditions will artificial

nuclei be transported from a given generator location

into supercooled clouds over a given target area?

I

I

':~FY66 results were reported in liInterim Report - Park Range Atmospheric
Water Resources Program"- E. Bollay Associates, Inc. 15 November 1966,
submitted to the Bureau of Reclamation, Contract 14.. 06-D~ 5640. FY66 re-
fers to the Federal Government fiscal year; FY66 covers the period 1 July
1965 - 30 June 1966.

I

I

I

- 3 -
