This <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />was true regardless of whether the clouds were shallow orographic ones <br /> <br />lying mainly over the mountains or deeper ones covering a wide area and <br /> <br />associated more with a synoptic disturbance. When the clouds were more <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />convective the liquid could be found over a greater range of altitudes <br /> <br />and also tended to be concentrated horizontally ~n cells. <br /> <br />Larger <br /> <br />amounts of supercooled liquid water WerE! observed to the east of the <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />radiometer site, over the Tushar Mtns, rather than to the west over the <br /> <br />valley. The rising terrain apparently promoted supercooled liquid water <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />development. <br /> <br />Numerical modeling studies of silver iodide trajectories <br /> <br />showed that delivery of seeding material to clouds over the Tushar Mtns <br /> <br />from ground generators in the valley to the west is frequently limited <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />by entrapment of the material beneath an inversion in the valley or by <br /> <br />northerly'or southerly flow parallel to rather than toward the Tushar <br /> <br />Mtns. Other findings based on the 1983 data set have appeared in Grant <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />and Rauber (1986), Griffith (1984), Long (1984b), Long and Walsh (1984), <br /> <br />Rauber and Grant (1985), and Sassen ~.!.!,.. (1986). <br /> <br />Subsequent to this work the Utah Division of Water Resources and <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />NOAA entered into contract agreements for further investigations. These <br /> <br />investigations involved field studies near Beaver, Utah and analysis of <br /> <br />the data collected. The field studies were conducted from 15 January to <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />15 March 1985 and made use of an expanded complement of instrumentation. <br /> <br />This allowed more detailed studies of the inner workings of winter <br /> <br />storms in the area as well as improved studies of the transport and <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />delivery of seeding material. <br /> <br />Funds from three fiscal years (FY84, <br /> <br />FY85, and FY86) were used in these further investigations, and this <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />-3- <br />
