4, DESCRIPTION OF SKEW T-LOG P PLOTS

The thermodynamic diagram used to display the stabi I ity and
moisture information and wind information available from the HIPLEX
soundings is a skew T-Iog P diagram [5]. This diagram displays a
vertical profile of temperature (heavy solid line) and dewpoint
(heavy dashed line) as a function of pressure (kPa), One kPa is
equal to 10 mbar; thus 10 kPa is 100 mbar. 100 kPa is 1000 mbar,
Mixing ratio curves in grams of water vapor per ki logram of dry air
are plotted on the diagram for 1-,3-.8-.20 g/kg values, Moisture and
dry adiabatic reference curves are also plotted on the diagram for
selected values as indicated in figure 2, Skewed temperature lines
are plotted for each 100C with tickmarks indicated at 50 kPa for each
2 oC i n t e r val. The tit I e I i n e 0 f e a c h p lot i n d i cat est he two - let t e r
station identification code and the date/time code of each sounding.
The date/time code is: YYMMDDHH (year/month/day/hour) so that
79060315 may be decoded as June 3. 1979 1500 G,m. t..

MA~9071715~
'-----Station ~
-70 -60 -50 -40 Da t e/ ti me (YYMMDDHH)
410

RAOS

100
Mixing ratio

10

-100
;..
