GEOLOGICAL DATA

A. Existing Geological Data

Geological information is available for the project
area from several sources. The United States Geological
Survey (USGS) has completed a general surface geological
map including the entire project area at a scale of 1:
250,000. The USGS has also completed surface geological
maps for the following areas:

Quad

Series

Mt. POvlell

15 min

Dillon

15 min

Kremmling

7.5 min

A detailed geological study of the northeastern sec-
tion of the proposed Sheephorn Reservoir was done by C.S.
Barclay in 1968, and is published as a USGS Open File Report.

B. Proposed Geotechnical Field Investigations

1) General

The following discussion describes the program in
detail. The work done early in the program along with
extensive review of the information currently available
may require changes in the location of, or addition to,
the planned geotechnical field investigations, including
drill holes, geophysical lines, trenches and areas of
mapping. The program will be designed to avoid disturbances
of existing vegetation and terrain. Environmental impacts
of the geophysical investigation will be negligible. The
impact of the geological investigation will be minimal.
Localized, light brushing at geophone locations may be re-
quired to survey in geophone locations. Disturbance during
drilling operations will be minimal. Dri~l holes will be
located in existing clear areas where possible. In project
areas not served by existing access routes, field investi-
gations will be made either on foot or by helicopter where
possible. It is presently anticipated that no road cuts
or construction will be required for access for drilling
or geophysical work.

There are no activities planned which will affect
people or wildlife in the project area. The geophysical
program is flexible enough for the work to be structured
when people or wildlife are not within the vicinity. In
project areas found to be particularly sensitive or non-
sensitive to geophysical activities, changes can be made
by the progra~ to mitigate any potential problems.

-3-
