gauge that had an orifice area five times that of the standard
20.3-cm gauge. Two sites also had 28.7-cm-diameter orifice
gauges.

A new PMS 2D-C ground station was obtained late in the
winter. This station was thoroughly tested, and was used for
interesting intercomparisons between a truck-mounted mode,
driven at a known speed, and a fixed, vertical aspirated mode.
However, no ice particle observations were made on Grand
Mesa.

A tethersonde balloon system was obtained late in the winter.
Some preliminary data were collected on wind shear In the
lowest few hundred meters above the Mesa. However, the

primary use of the system was for personnel familiarization
and equipment testing.

1.6 Analyses

Sections 2 through 7 discuss various analyses performed with
the data base available from the instrumentation systems
described, and are actually summaries of more detailed
memos and research papers, that are listed in the Bibliog-
raphy, section 8. Section 2 describes the SLW investigations,
section 3 covers precipitation investigations, section 4 dis-
cusses ice crystal studies and their implications, section 5
considers airflow studies, section 6 describes specific instru-
mentation tests or intercomparisons, and section 7 contains
a summary and recommendations.

J

..

"

4
