~

ABSTRAcr

To help augment diminished water supplies, an emergency cloud seeding
project was conducted for Santa Barbara County by North American Weather
Consultants durin.g a portion of the 1977-78 winter storm season.

Initial plans called for both aerial and ground based seeding tech-
niques but the nature of the storms and the condition of the watershed
ul timately dictated that only the ground based seeding mode lvas used.
The area affected by this seeding mode was limited to the higher yield
portions of the watershed in the northeastern part of Santa Barbara County
and those counties immediately adjacent.

Nine storm periods between January 4 and February 9 were seeded
from the groWld based site at Figueroa l'1ountain Guard Station using
silver iodide flares.

A statistical evaluation of total storm precipitation during the
seeded period indicates thc1.t approximately 40 percent more precipitation
fell in the target area than would be expected when compared to the
amount that was observed in a nearby control area. This amounts to an
average of 2.6 inches of extra water over the entire target and an
average of 3.5 inches due to seeding over the higher yield portion of
Santa Barbara County.

1
