-;.

In the present non-randomized operational project sometimes only por-
tions of convection bands were seeded or occasionally entire convection
bands were not seeded at all during a storm. For that reason an evalua-
tion of individual convection band seeding occurring within a stonn has
not been made. The effect of seeding on the whole stonn has been evaluated,
however, utilizing 48 hour periods as was done during the research project.
(Investigation of the historical stonn periods indicated that they typically
have durations of between 12 and 36 hours.)

During the period from January 4 through February 10 a total of nine
storms occurred and all were seeded. These nine stonn periods are incli-
cated in Table 2 along with the 48 hour period within which the precipita-
tion was observed.

Table 2. 1978 seeded stor~m periods.
48 hour time block
Stonn No. Date Begin 0000 PST End 0000 PST
1 1/4/78 1/4 1/6
2 1/6/i78 1/6 1/8
3 1/9/78 1/9 1/11
4 1/14/78 1/14 1/16
5 1/16/78 1/16 1/18
6 1/18/78 1/18 1/20
7 2/5/78 2/5 2/7
8 2/7/78 2/7 2/9
9 2/9/78 2/9 2/11

A historical sample consisting of 18 non-seeded storm periods was
used from the data base of the research project.
