II
I
~ :1

accretion, aggregation). The most important acti-

vity of the 1985-86 field program will be to reduce

this uncertainty. The basic approach will be to

release seeding material into relatively simple

clouds over the Grand Mesa, and to attempt to

direct 1 y det,ect the mi c rophys i ca 1 changes caused by

the seeding including modifications in ice particle

concentration, size spectra and habit, and in SLW

content. Two modes of seeding will be utilized.

These are:

a) Ground r(~leased AgI from a generator(s) upwind
of the gE~neral vicinity of the GMO. Ai reraft

passes will then be made across the wind in a

manner similar to the T & 0 investigations, but

no lower than 12,300 feet (375m) which is 1000
feet (305m) above the highest point on the

Mesa. This is because lower flight is not

practical under the IFR conditions that will be
sampled.

The ground PMS (Particle Measuring Systemls)

2D-C probe and snow particle camera near Island

Lake, and the network of high resolution preci-

pitation gauges (see Figure 2), will also moni-

tor changes in ice crystal characteristics and

precipitation rate, respectively.

8
