,
,

,
,

precipitation rates are in the 0.5 to 1 mm/hr range. The
ratio of Footprint Precip and these wintertime rates is a
seeding increment. However, it should not be compared with
the increme~ts suggested below in Section 5.1.8. The modeled
increment applies only to the particular conditions used as
input for the model.

5.1.8

Suggested Seeding Increments

Prior to the design work, other drought study participants

requested an estimate of seeding increments.

Two values have

been provided, a conservative estimate (Ml) and a liberal

estimate (~12).

The two estimates also differ in length of

seeding programs.

T~e conservative estimate is based on a

seeding program from ~ovember 1 to March 31. while the liberal
est iO!la te is asso ci a ted wi th seedi ng from November 1 "to \1ay 31.
The incre~ents listed in Table 5.2 were based on the evaluation
of the current seedi~g program in Utah (Tho~pson and Griffith,
1981) and on past experience in areas not affected by that
program. The liberal estimate also includes advances in the
state of the art of weather modifica:ion that coald occur

over the next few years.

TABLE 5.2
Suggested Seeding Increments

Di vi sian

Conse~vative (~1)

Liberal (M2)

We S1:ern
Dixie
North Central
South Central
Northern Mountai3s
Uinta Basi~
Sou"t!least

5%

15%

10
10
10
10
o
5

20
20
20
20
10
15

5-13
