HIPLEX sites and estimates will be compared with observed values. Fifteen
continental rainfall cases have been examined using the algorithm derived by
NOAA for tropical convective clouds. Five cases from each of the three
HIPLEX sites have been completed. This relationship was used as a starting
point for the HIPLEX studies and will be modified after initial tests to
incorporate specific weather features encountered in the High Plains.

A technique developed for use in tropical and semitropical locations is being
assessed for application to the High Plains by comparing satellite-derived
rain estimates to rain gage measurements at the three HIPLEX sites. In
another study, a computer program produces statistics on cloud history and
behavior for analysis. Cooperative studies are being conducted to examine
variations between similar programs developed by Colorado State University
and the University of North Dakota.

~

.~

CONTRACTOR: State of Wyoming, Cheyenne, Wyoming
CONTRACT NO.: None (Memorandum of Understanding)
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Not applicable
CONTRACT PERIOD: January 20, 1978 - Continuing
FY79 FUNDING: None
PURPOSE: Cooperative weather modification research

This Memorandum of Understanding provides coordination between the State of
Wyoming and the Water and Power Resources Service for possible future cloud
seeding programs. Should the need for research projects develop in Wyoming,
the State and Water and Power will cooperate in the planning, design, and
execution of scientific research and associated studies on the social, legal,
economic, and environmental implications.
