CONTRACTOR: State of orth Dakota, Weather Modification Board, Bismarck,
North 0 kot a
CONTRACT NO. 6-07-0R-2 070 (Memorandum of Understanding)
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR Martin Schock
CONTRACT PERIOD: Marc 1, 1976, to December 31, 1978
FY79 FUNDING: None
PURPOSE: Cooperative eather modification research

Water and Power provid d access to the Skywater EDN for use by the North
Dakota Weather Modific tion Board during its 1977 Cloud Modification Project.
The network data colle tion and analysis capabilities were used routinely by
field meteorologists w 0 directed the actual seeding operations. Upper air
observations made by t e Board were used as input to the Skywater Great
Plains Cumulus Model, nd the Board evaluated the model's performance as an
independent predictor f convective activity in the North Dakota area. The
model was a valuable f recast tool when used with other products available to
the forecaster. It pr vided information about stabil ity and potential cloud
growth which was not 0 tainable from analysis of a thermodynamic diagram. A
letter-type final repo t was submitted for this Memorandum of Understanding
during the early part f fiscal year 1979.

CONTRACTOR: Universit of 'Washington, Seattle, Washington
CONTRACT NO. 6-07-DR-2 110
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR Peter Hobbs and Lawrence Radke
CONT~ACT PERIOD: June 7, 1976, to November 20, 1978
FY79 FUNDING: None
PURPOSE: Airborne aer and cloud physics research

The goals of this contract were:

. To measure aerosol size distributions and activity spectra of different
cloud active nuclei over a range of meteorological conditions and
geographical settings on the High Plains.

. To determine typical temporal and spatial variations of these particles.

· To identify the ma"or meteorological and geographical variables which
determine the aerosol particle concentrations.

. To measure and compare cloud and precipitation particle size distribu-
tions and ice particle concentrations, and their evolution with time,
in natural and seede summertimE! clouds in the Miles City, Montana
ar ea.

. To make preliminar assessments of seeding agents, dosages, and methods
of delivery which mi ht be most effective in increasing precipitation
from summertime clou s in the Miles City area.

Results of this researc are presented in a comprehensive 417-page final
report which clearly sh ws the aerosol distribution properties on the High
Plains in 1975, 1976, a d 1977 during summer months. Detailed descriptions

15
