e

CHAPTER 2
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

e:

2. 1 PROJECT AREA
The seeding operations for the Pilot Project during the 1974-
75 season continued in sub-areas 1 and 2 (as defined in Figure 2-1) in
a manner similar to the first three seasons of operation. Monitoring
of precipitation and other meteorological, hydrological and environ-
mental data was continued as established during the previous season.

Again this season each of the sub-areas was divided approxi-
mately in half and identified as West (W) or East (E) for Area 1 and
North (N) or South (8) for Arlaa 2. The division of the sub-areas was
done along the ridge lines separating the Los Pinos, Piedra, San Juan
and Rio Blanco drainage basins. This further division of the sub-areas
allowed the forecasters to better define the expected primary and
secondary areas of the target to be affected by seeding during each
experimental day.

e

2.2 PROJECT INSTRUMENTATION
All the ice nuclei generators and meteorological equipment
used during the 1974-75 operating season were in the same field locations
as the previous years with the following exceptions:
1) The manual generator (number 18 in Figure 2-1) at the
Espinosa site was relocated to a new site 1 1/2 miles
south of Piedra, Colorado. This move was due to the
unreliability of the previous operator.
2) The manual g€~nerator (number 26 in Figure 2-1) at the
Hudson site was relocated about one mile north, north-
west of the previous site. The previous operator sold
his property and the new owners were not interested in
operating the !generator.
3) The expansion type ice nucleus counter at Hovenweep
was relocated in the northwest corner of Cortez, Colo-
rado. The operators moved to Cortez because their
children started attending school.

2-1
