Snow research

The snow project is to determine
the physical and economic feasibili-
ty 01 increasing snowfall in the
Rocky Mounlains to provide more
run-off water to southern Alberta,
often plagued by shortages.
The first few years of this new
project will be devoted 10 reviewing
similar projects in the United Stales.
carefully comparing their weather
situations with those here. This
period will also be used 10 observe
mountain clouds and snowfall to

.

establish a climatology of
atmospheric conditions during
snowfall events. Data already
gathered by the cloud physics air-
craft indicate the existence of some
cloud seeding potential.
If the project's economic benehts
warrant, studies will begin on deter.
mining cloud processes and on
developing modification hypotheses
for seeding lests. These studies
could lead to recommendations for
a future program.

Researchers are studying methods
of increasing snowfall on mountain
tops to increase spring runoff and
water to the plains regions.
