Table XIV, for example, <br />shows the coincident amounts of precipitation at the <br />respective stations hour by hour for the period 27- <br />29 December 1964. This is presented as a typical <br />case to show the correspondence of precipitation for <br />the respective hours and is typical of some of the <br />heavier storms in the San Juan area. In this par- <br />ticular sequence, there were 32 hours that had <br />precipitation at one or more stations. Slightly more <br />than half of these (17 hours) had coincident precipita- <br />tion at two or more stations. A quarter of these <br />(8 hours) had coincident precipitation at three or more <br />stations and only four hours had simulataneous <br /> <br />precipitation at all four stations. During the hours <br />shown with an "X" for Telluride, the gage was only <br />accumulating precipitation and not giving hourly <br />amounts. These hours have not been counted in the <br />above tabulation, but are shown s,ince this is fre- <br />quently the case for hourly precipita tion data <br />reported in the publication "Climatological Data. II <br />Precipitation at any individual station is highly <br />dependent upon its orographic exposure cat any <br />specific time, and it cannot be assumed that snowfall <br />is occu'rring simultaneously at all areas during <br />precipitation episodes.
