.

along the highway between the remote sensing site and the water detector

and at other sites as well. The instrumentation and shelter available

at the remote sensing site make it suitable as a "base" site for the

surface microphysics obser'i/ations. The surface observations will be

integrated with the remote ~iensing data. Details of the instrumentation

and of the surface observational techniques appear in Appendix B.

The cloud physics and kinematics experiments will be coordinated by

Dr. Alex Long of the Desert Research Institute. He will be responsible

for keeping that part of the field effort focused on the stated scien-

tific objectives. He will have responsibility for decisions as to when

to commence the experiments and how to conduct them. In making these

decisions he will actively consult with the participating scientists and

seek their suggestions and advice. Use of their expertise will be

important to the success of the field program. He will make arrange-

ments for the joint data collection by the various pieces of instrumen-

tation which is an important aspect of the program and for independent

data collection by individu,al pieces of instrumentation where that is

appropriate. Much of the coordination will be done from the NCAR C-band

Doppler radar. That radar has a good overview of the clouds and has

graphic displays of both radar reflectivity factor and Doppler velocity.

Dr. Long will thus have primary responsibility for use of the NCAR

C-band radar consistent with NCAR operational procedures.

A decision to proceed with the cloud physics and kinematics experi-

ments will be made on the basis of an existing or impending STORM. The

weather forecasts will be us,eful for anticipating weather more than 6 hr

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

-34-
