.

.

has been placed there in past winter cloud seeding seasons in order to

elevate seeding material above any trapping inversions and place it in

wind flow more favorable to transport toward the mountains. SF6 tracer

experiments from this elevated site may show how valuable it is and

point the way toward siting more generators at such sites.

The sequential bag samplers will be placed at either of two sets of

locations. Initially the samplers will be located at up to 15 sites

along Utah State Highway 160 running nor1th and south from Beaver. This

highway is in a valley location about 7 km to the west of the base of

the Tushar Mtns. SF 6 released from the Adamsville (valley) site will be

sampled here. Following this initial phase of the work approximately

ten samplers will be relocated to high elevation sites on the western

slopes of the Tushar Mtns. SF6 released from both the Adamsville

(valley) and Jack Henry Knoll (high elevation) sites will be sampled

here. The bag samples from the high l~levation sites will be collected

by helicopter. Although the SF6 release and sampling may occur in any

weather conditions, the helicopter operations must be conducted in safe

flying weather. If a STORM is in progress, safety may thus dictate con-

ducting the SF6 studies toward the end of the STORM.

The SF6 samples will be analyzed in Beaver using a portable gas

chromatograph and electron capture detec:tor. Part of each sample will

be injected into a stream of ultra-pure nitrogen. This serves as a

carrier gas for the sample and as an ionization medium for the detector.

The carrier gas is used to transport the sample into the chromatograph

column. Here the sample is separated into its individual components.

They are then eluted from the column and passed through the detector to

measure their relative concentrations ;and electron affinity.
