.

.

transport would have been then. This additional information may improve

procedures of the operational project.

Current and impending weather, upon which an experiment decision is

based, will be derived from the usual forecast products, from GOES

satellite imagery, from Adamsville rawinsonde data, from local meteoro-

logical observations, and from wind data from the C-band Doppler radar.

This radar can make Velocity-Azimuth-Display (V AD) scans, and from these

it is simple to estimate the wind speed and direction in the clouds

overhead. This information is more frequent than that from the rawin-

sonde. Some C-band Doppler radar operations will therefore be conducted

before and during the delivery experiments. Chaff tracking experiments

using the Ka-band dual-polarization radar may be conducted alongside

some of the delivery experiments to g,ather supplemental, supporting

information. Once a decision has been made to conduct the delivery

experiments they will be carried out in the following manner.

a. SF,. tracer experiments. Because SF6 is an inert gas occurring

in very small concentrations naturally its presence downwind of a

release site can be attributed to transport and delivery of the released

material through the atmosphere to that site. SF6 is thus often used to

trace the movement of air pollutants. Its use in the present weather

modification research program will be somewhat of a feasibility study.

This is partly because the SF6 does not physically interact with the

cloud in the same way as silver iodide ice nucleating material. Thus

SF6 measurements may not entirely reflect the transport of silver iodide

which would have .occurred had there be~m seeding.

Relatively standard equipment will be used for releasing and

sampling the SF6. Release will be from bottles containing 99.5 percent

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

-27-
