chart.

Data collected in the fixed zenith-pointing mode are displayed

in time-series format.

Also located at the Merchant Valley remote sensing site will be the

University of Utah polarization diversity Iidar. The lidar will be

operated in a zenith-pointing mode most of the time. It will be pointed

in other directions only when the Ka-band radar and radiometer are in

elevation scan mode and then along the same azimuth as these instru-

ments. The primary data variable is the linear depolarization ratio 0

which is the ratio of the perpendicular-polarized returned signal to the

parallel-polarized returned signal. It is recorded as a function of

range from the Iidar. Depolarization ratio data collected in the

zenith-pointing mode are usually displayed in the form of a contoured

time-height diagram. The depolarization ratio 0 is related to the types

of hydrometeors in the cloud (see Table 3.). Table 3 shows that regions

of liquid water may be identified, although not unambiguously, on the

basis of 0 <0.15. Sassen (1978) provides details of this and other cri-

teria for characterizing cloud particles.

I n addition to this array of remote sensing instrumentation a

supercooled liquid water detector will be installed by Atmospherics

I ncorporated at a high elevation (2975 m) exposed site likely to be in

supercooled cloud. This instrument measures the flux and content of

supercooled liquid water passing the site. The flux measuring part of

the device consists of a Rosemount aviation icing rate probe. The probe

accumulates ice at all temperatures below oC. At a certain level of

.accumulation there is a short deicing cycle. The number of such cycles

per unit time is directly proportional to the flux of supercooled liquid

water past the probe. Two deiced recording anemometers are collocated

20

.1

.

.

.

.

-~..

.

.

.

.

.
