c. Cloud physics and kinematics experiments

The analysis of the cloud physics and kinematics experiments will

utilize a variety of data.

Most of the data will be collected with

remote sensing instrumentation. The NCAR CP3 C-band Doppler radar will

be placed at the base of the Tushar Mtns (elevation 1884 m) (see Figure

1) . Reflectivity and Doppler radial velocity data will be collected

with a sequence of several different scans of the radar (see Table 2).

This sequence should yield the data needed for all of the cloud physics

and kinematics experiments. The C-band radar data will be suitable for

study alone or as part of a joint data set including data from the WPL

Ka-band Doppler dual-polarization radar and radiometer.

A detailed

discussion of the scans of all these instruments appears in the 1985

Field Operations Plan. The WPL Ka-band radar will be located at a 2568

m elevated site in. Merchant Valley on the slopes of the mountains. This

radar measures circular depolarization ratio (CDR) in addition to the

variables measured by the C-band radar. The two radars will provide

information on the growth of precipitation particles and on their

motions through the clouds. Data from both radars can be processed with

the NCAR/FOF Research Data Support System (RDSS) and also displayed in a

wide range of formats. Also located at the Merchant Valley site will be

the WPL dual-wavelength, steerable microwave radiometer. It measures

the amount of liquid water integrated along its field of view. Data

collected with the instrument scanning in azimuth mode (see Table 2) are

usefully plotted and contoured on a two-dimensional azimuth vs. time

18

-I
I

-I

.

.

,<,e'

----.'

.

.

.

.

.
