.

.

potential temperature, equivall~nt potential temperature, and wind velo-

city. These will aid the identification of frontal zones and saturated

regions of the atmosphere. ThE~ NAWC OMNIMBUS computer program will be

applied to the individual sOUlndings to yield other information. For

calculated cloud layers this information will include cloud base and top

pressure, height, temperaturei, saturated mixing ratio, and wind velo-

city, the height and temperature of detected inversions, the height of

the OC and -5C levels if theiy are within the cloudy layers, in-cloud

lapse rates, stability index and height of any region of convective

instability, and vector wind shear.

The times when fronts pass through the study area (FROPA) and when

cirrus decks pass through (CIRPA) will be determined. The data set used

will consist of synoptic maps, Adamsville soundings, local weather

observations, hygrothermograph and microbarograph records, and GOES

satellite imagery.

A climatological analysis will be made to determine whether certain

meteorological conditions in the 1985 field program are representative

of conditions in prior years. Synoptic weather charts will be

classified on the basis of upper-level flow, surface pressure, and

outbreaks of polar air at the surface and compared with a long-term

classification of such weather charts. Upper air soundings at Ely and

Las Vegas, Nevada during the '1985 study period will be compared with the

long-term normals to determine whether in 1985 there are significant

departures from normal of upper air temperatures, winds, etc. Surface

temperatures and precipitation at the Beaver climatological station in

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

15
