<br />an intention to use it for direct jrrigation as well as for <br />the filling of reservoirs, as part of the system to irrigate <br />230,000 acres, more or less. <br /> <br />The canal is 45.7 miles in length, and was made with a <br />bottom width of 30 feet, side slopes 1 to 1 in excava- <br />tion, and an embankment on the lower side ,,".!hose crest <br />is 8 feet above the bottom of the canal. This bank is 10 <br />feet wide, and has side slopes of 11/2 to 1. It is placed <br />out so as to leave a berm of 8 to 10 feet inside. The <br />water is usually carried to a deptn of not exceeding 6 <br />feet. The canal involved the excavation of 1,173,800 <br />cubic yards, of v;/'hich 733,000 yards was in the section <br />from the headgate to Horse Creek. The totai cost of the <br />work, including the right of 'Nay, dam. headgate, siphons, <br />bridges, waste gates, buildings, etc., was S258,699.82. <br />It has a grade of 2.5 feet In 10,000 or 1.32 feet per m~le, <br />which appears sufficient to keep the canal scoured to a <br />clean even section, without deposit or erosion. <br /> <br />STRUCTURES. <br /> <br />The principal structures with this canal are (1) the dam <br />at the river, (2) the headgate; (3) the main waste gates; <br />(4) the crossing of Holbrook lower wasteway; (5) the <br />crossing of the Jackso'l !ateral of the Holbrook Cana~; <br />(6) the siphon under the Holbrook Ca1a!; (7) the waste <br />gate into Horse CreeK; (8) the Horse Creek siphon cross- <br />ing of reinforced conc~ete; (9) the gate for tre supp!y of <br />the Horse Creek Reservoir: (10) the Adobe Creek si- <br />phon, and (i 1) the headgate of the Circle Ditch, at Adobe <br />Creek Reservoir.
