<br />The Kickina Bird Canal. at the division and below. was <br />v: I <br />built with a bottom vvidth of 36 feet and a carrying depth <br />of 6 feet, with a grade of 1 : 5000. <br /> <br />The outlet gates of the Fort Lyon Canal at the head of <br />the laterals have already been referred to in the histori- <br />cal sketch. These gates are manipu!ated, set and locked <br />in any desired position to hold a given rate of discharge <br />by the Deputy Ditch Superintendent. or ditch rider. The <br />gates are liable to get out of repair very easily, as they <br />are quite simple. although the iron or steel parts of the <br />gates are subject to rust and decay with time. <br /> <br />LATERAL DITCHES. <br /> <br />Laterai ditches are al! Sized from about 5 second-feet to <br />65, which is the capacity of the largest lateral. They <br />have a total length of 867 miles. The apportionment or <br />division of water is made to each lateral by measure- <br />ment in smail rating flumes set near the head of the <br />lateral.
