<br />rebuilt all of its principal structures, including the Horse <br />CreeK Flume, Adobe Creek crossing and \vaste gates, <br />and the division gates at GaQeby Arroyo, and proceeded <br />to utilize the flood and winter water so appropriated by <br />filling these large reservoirs, drawing off the \vater from <br />time to time as needed for irrigation under the Amity <br />Canal. <br /> <br />The management of the Canai Company found the old <br />wooden outlet gates to farm laterais very defective in <br />the matter of control and distribution of water, and after <br />some deliberation adooted the device now used <br />I <br /> <br />throughout the entire system. called the Powell cast iron <br />headgates, \\lith vitrified sewer pipe passing underneath <br />the bank. This gate was invented and patented by B. F. <br />Powell, the present local Consulting Engineer of the <br />Company, and is an effective, cheap and satisfactory <br />gate, of the most permanent character, there are some <br />300 of these latera! outlets, each provided ,-,vith from <br />one to five Powell oates. each from 10 to 15 inches in <br />..., c <br />diameter, the number and size varying with the volume <br />of water to be conveyed in the laterals. <br /> <br />RESERVOIRS AND LATER DEVELOPMENT. <br /> <br />As conditions continued to improve it was realized that <br />many improvements to the system were needed, and <br />moreover, the receiver's debt of 821,000.00 was still <br />against the property. The stockholders also began to <br />realize that with 950 second-feet of recognized outstand- <br />ing water rights and but 761.8 second-feet of decreed <br />priority in the river, it was impossible to give satisfac- <br />tory service to all, and at their annual meeting held in <br />December, 1901. they levied an assessment of 81.00 <br /> <br />19 <br />
