CDM

Section 7
Evaluation and Selection of Conservation Measures and Programs

7.2.6 Public Education

Informative and Understandable Water Bill

As described in Section 2.6, Erie's water bill provides each customer with information
on how much water they used per monthly billing cycle and how much water was
used the same month of the previous year. This information enables customers to
compare and regulate the water usage on a monthly basis. Erie also has a website
explaining items on the water bill as well as a staff member that can answer
customers' questions. This has proven to be an effective means to increase customers'
awareness on how much water they are using.

Distribution of Conservation Information

Section 2.6 describes Erie's use of a web site and e-mail distribution list to convey
information regarding water conservation. Both of these tools have proven to be an
effective means to distribute information to customers. Erie plans to expand this
program by conveying additional conservation information through the town's
website, newspaper, bill inserts, and pamphlets.

. Website - Erie plans to increase the amount of information on water conservation
on its website. The town is currently updating its webpage on forestry and will be
incorporating additional information on xeriscaping. Erie also plans on adding a
link to the NCWCD's website on xeriscaping. This will provide useful information
to customers who are interested in establishing xeriscape landscaping.

. Newspaperfbill insert - Erie plans to include a conservation article in its
newspaper or bill insert on an annual basis. This will provide another means for
customers to be educated on how they may conserve water.

. Water conservation pamphlets - Erie plans to provide a pamphlet on water
conservation oriented landscaping maintenance guidelines. This pamphlet will be
distributed to all current HOAs and all new HOAs established in Erie. Erie also
plans on developing a xeriscaping pamphlet that will be distributed to customers
during public gatherings. This includes the annual town Fair and Arbor Day
celebration in addition to other public gatherings.

School Programs

As described in Section 2.6, Erie has annually provided a 3-day water education
program for fourth and fifth graders since 2003. Topics include: equipment safety,
water treatment, stormwater, and water conservation. This program has received
positive feedback from teachers, students, and parents. Children have the opportunity
to teach their parents about Erie's water system and conservation. Erie plans to
continue to implement this program.

DRAFT

7-7

\\DENSVR1\PROJECTS\9228 - ERIE\CONSERVATION PLAN\REPORT\DRAFT PRIOR TO PUBLIC REVIEW\CONNIE FORMATTED\SECTION 7.DOC
