Wet winter weather throughout Arizona has led Phoenix to end our water alert.

But we still want to encourage everyone in the Valley to conserve water. It's
crucial for our region.

..

With so little rain back to the mid-1990s, the city moved to what's called a "Stage
1 Water Alert" in January 2003. Salt River Project had cut its water allocation for
Phoenix, other cities and other water customers; Roosevelt Lake had shrunk to
18 percent of capacity. The alert triggered Phoenix's Drought Management Plan,
which urged residents and mandated city departments to cut water use by 5
percent.
advertisement

These steps in Phoenix and other Valley cities accomplished a

great deal.

..

Residents turned off the sprinklers after rainstorms. We started thinking twice
before pulling out the hose to wash the car on Saturday moming.

Now winter rain in the warm parts of our state and a good snowpack up north at
least temporarily have tumed around the troubling water numbers.

Roosevelt Lake is more than 90 percent full. We clearly have enough water to
meet residents' needs for the next year and maybe longer.

Because of all of these factors, Phoenix decided to end the "Stage 1" alert.

At the same time, we want to encourage residents to keep conserving. We see
the recent wet cycle as a temporary improvement in a long-term dry cycle. Think
... of it as a pesky raindrop on your dry windshield.

The Valley's other big water source, the Colorado River, is still well below
normal, and it would take several wet years to fill up that system. No long-term
forecasts show that the wet season we just experienced will become the norm.

With that in mind, Phoenix is continuing programs and publicity to encourage
water conservation, while looking for new, creative ways to save water.

We are creating a permanent 'Water Efficiency Action Team" to monitor water
Ii use by city departments and act as a role model for residents.

http://www.azcentral.comlarizonarepublic/opinions/articles/0430satlets4-30 1.html

You can find great ideas for saving water by visiting wateruseitwisely.comor

PH
Tuc
Fla
Tra

....
