Division 2 (Arkansas River)
The climate of the upper portions of the Arkansas River basin in Colorado is quite
varied. The basin starts in the central mountains of Colorado (Lake County) and
traverses in a near southerly direction until the river leaves Chaffee County and enters
Fremont County. After entering Fremont Co. the river traverses in predominantly
easterly direction through Canon City and Pueblo until reaching the Kansas state line
near Holly. A majority of the ‘north-south’ section of the river along with a section in
Fremont County (near Canon City) accumulate the majority of the ‘peak’ seasonal runoff
from snowmelt in the higher elevations.
As a result the precipitation/runoff analyses for the area the analyses are
segmented into three basins from the headwaters to approximately Pueblo Reservoir,
where much of the remaining seasonal runoff is held for later release for users
downstream. A map of the basin can be found in Figure 18. The demand section for
consumption will briefly examine points at Pueblo and La Junta, which is much further
down the river but, is a hub of agricultural activity that is reliant on Arkansas River
water.
Figure 18.
