Presentation on Aquatic Resource Management by Ted Smith, Director, Aquaculture <br />Program, Trinidad State Junior College <br />Speaking of water, we need to start pressuring coastal states to start desalinization. <br />Western Regional Aquaculture Consortium funded by USDA -Univ. of AZ and TSJC - <br />biodiesel too water dependent. Spoke of micro-algae and other biofuels. Why not <br />capture water from the flooded midwest? <br />Aquaculture and traditional agriculture can go hand in glove. Integrated aquatic <br />resource management -The fastest growing ag industry in the world. He's working on <br />an educational grant from USDA for TSJC as aHispanic-serving institution relating to <br />aquaculture education. Implications for water conservation, sustainability, and farm <br />diversification -include fish along with potatoes, barley. Value of aqua crop makes <br />center pivot corners potential. Ray Wright asked how farmers could use corners, and <br />possibly to form a cooperative for processing and marketing ? Ray: Saguache County <br />artesian wells as hatcheries? Ted: These are certainly possibilities. Mike: Could a <br />standard design be used: tanks, pumps, put together as units which can be put into <br />use? Ted, to some extent but each facility may have to be more specific, and <br />remember it depends on the well's decree !
