provide additional water supplies to meet growing demands for urban, industrial, recreation, and
environmental water needs in Colorado. It is also recognized that Colorado's water resources
should not be wasted and that century old irrigation systems and practices could benefit from
modernization. With this in mind, CWCB staff is working with the CAWA to determine what
measures and activities might be undertaken to both educate the public and policy makers on
agriculture conservation issues and to explore opportunities to improve agriculture water use.
We have tried to be mindful of the legal, engineering and practical limitations of agricultural
water conservation and efficiency measures in creating additional water supplies while listing
where opportunities may exist. The report includes concepts for potential future consideration
and/or implementation. These potential considerations range from pilot projects to regulatory
and statutory clarifications. In addition, as you review the draft report, please consider how and
to what extent the agricultural water conservation and efficiency measures discussed in the report
can help in meeting Colorado's future water needs as part of water supply alternatives and what
types of activities you as Board members may wish to pursue in the future.
*The Colorado Agriculture Water Alliance (CAWA) was farmed in X005 to provide a body that represents
the diversity within the agricultural industry to discuss, identify problems and find ways to address key
water issues. Members of the Colorado Ag Water Alliance include r'epr'esentatives f •om Colorado
Cattlemen's Association, Colorado Farm Bureau, Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, Western Dairy
Association, Colorado Association of Conservation Districts, Colorado Livestock Association, Green
Industries of Colorado, Colorado Corn Growers, Colorado Aquaculture, Colorado Horse Council and
the Colorado Onion Association. The Colorado Department afAgriculture and Colorado State University
provide support surd act in an advisory capacity as well. The CAWA is entirely volunteer supported.
