Land Letter

Page 2 of2

"'\.--
.,.~, II

In a statement, California Gov. Gray Davis (D) said he was "greatly encouraged by the favorable reaction of
the Department of the Interior" to the QSA agreement. "Even more encouraging is Interior's willingness to
be flexible and innovative in dealing with issues surrounding the Salton Sea."

Interior intends to complete review of the QSA documents by April 30.

Click here to download the letter.

Salton Sea Authority board backs North Lake restoration plan

Meanwhile, the Salton Sea Authority Board of Directors last week voted to proceed with a plan that would
essentially divide California's largest lake in two. The so-called North Lj;lke altern~tlve would create a
saltwater lake in the northern part of the Salton Sea with a...s.ingle, 8.5 mile d~l1!.. A canal or channel would
lead from the lake to a desalination plant and brine pool in the south.

SSA is working on a Salton Sea restoration plan to combat rising saline levels, deteriorating lake conditions
and the projected loss of up to 300,000 acre-feet of water in the water transfer.

"The North Lake proposal would result in a smaller, c1e~ner sea than under present conditions, with ~
stabilized at ocean water levels and a ~t~hle water 51lrf~ce near the current shoreline elevation," an SSA
report said. The proposal would also preserve key habitat areas, recreational opportunities and better
control odor from the lake (Land Letter, April 3).

Riverside County Supervisor Roy Wilson, who is also an SSA board member, said, "We have reviewed
countless studies and proposals, and ~ we have somethina we can move forward on. The North Lake
concept comes closest to any that we have seen to meet wildlife and recreation objectives plus helping to
satisfy southern California water supply needs."

ENVIRONMENT &.
