Calif., Nev. ask Ariz. for banked supplies

E&E PUBLISHING E&E DAilY GREENWIRE LAND LETTER

Calif., Nev. ask Ariz. for banked supplies

WATER
Greenwire
03/10/2003

Arizona is grappling to fulfill requests from California and Nevada to withdraw up to 29 billion
gallons of water from the state's water bank.

To make up for water lost when the Interior Department cut California and Nevada's take of the
Colorado River in January, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the
Southern Nevada Water Authority have asked Arizona in recent weeks to withdraw water they
had paid Arizona to store. Nevada wants about 10,000 acre-feet (about 3.3 billion gallons) from
the 50,000 acre-feet it deposited and California wants all the water it deposited -- about 26 billion
gallons.

But Arizona officials are questioning whether the state can accommodate the requests. "We told
Nevada it's highly unlikely we could accomplish the water they asked for," said Larry Dozier,
deputy general manager of the Central Arizona Project. "We told California it's highly unlikely we
could accomplish the full amount they want, but maybe some of it" (Shaun McKinnon, Arizona
Republic, March 10). -- LM

ENVIRONMENT & ENERGY DAILY.
