ent ~y: B~ll swan consulting Servicesj 480 941 8658j
~Greeris' crimp water deal - 12120/02 - NCTimes.net

Dec-23-02 12:26PMj

Page 5
Page 2 of2

Do the environmental groups really want to "save" thc:bradrish., dirty Salton Sea at the
expense of thousands of families needing water, or is it in their best financial interest?

I say follow the money. If they say the complete death of the sea is worth 51.5 billion, then
a 20 percent harm would be worth about $300 million to,.a group like the Center for
Biological Diversity when they sue. And they will sue ,because that is where their revenue
comes from. An example of this was the recently approved pollution rule on factory-style
farms.

Environmentalists sued because of the pollution these fatms create. The result is a cost to
farmers of 5326 million dollars a year, according to the HP A. The same will happen
regarding the Salton Sea. h is just a question of who ultimately will have to pay oft'the
environmental groups before we finally get the water. Whether they sue the Imperial
Irrigation District, the state or federal government or the family farmers, somebody is going
to have to pay.

We may ultimately get some water, but some environmental group will certainly get a lot of
money.

Ted Hillock of Temecula is a regular columnist for The Californian.
