SACR..-\..v1ENTO -- Negotiators for some ofCaiifomia's biggest water
to end decades ofhagg!i.....lg over the state's share of water from the
Colorado River.
The compromise should dear the way for San Diego to secure a large
new source of water that could sustain the region's growth through the
early part of the next century.

Final details of the complex agreement must still be drafted by attorneys
and ratified by negotiators and their boards of directors. Those involved
remained tight-lipped and cautious, given a history of near n-isses in the
rancorous talks.
But state and federal officials announced the agreement as a/ait

l'
accompJz.

"This is the keystone agreement that Southern California needs to help
secure its water future," said Da"id Hayes, a deputy secretary at the
Depanment cfthe Interior and the lead federal negotiator.

But there was no immediate indication of what effect the agreement
might have on water rates in Sa.Tl Diego and throughout Southern
CaEforrja.

If approved, tee accord would allew Imperial Valley farmers to ship up
to 200,000 acre.feet of water a year to the San Diego County Water
Authority sometime after 2001.

The deal promises to er..d a dispute dating back to the early 19305 over
how much water severa! agencies, including the ma."J1IDoth Metropolitan
\Vater DiStri;:t, are entitled to draw from the Colorado River.
