" FACTS .
~IGURES

Water

Established in 1911, lID's Water
Department delivers water to 500,000
acres of Imperial Valley fannland,
through a 1,675-mile network of
laterals and canals.

Power

lID entered the power inpustry inl936
when it recogn4:ed its potential'for low-
cost hydroelectric energy from its five
falling water drops along the All-
AmericanCanal. lID's fIrst power
customers, however, were served
electricity produced at its diesel
generation plant in Brawley.

lID expanded its power system to the
CoachellaValley with the 1943
purchase of the Nevada-CalifolJlia
Electric Company .By that time, Drops
3 and 4 of' the All-American Canal
were generating hydroelectric power.

lID now'ranks as the sixth largest power
utility in California, based on power
consumption. With the repowering of
Unit 2 at the EI Centro Steam Plant, lID
became the fIrst utility in California to
build new power plant capacity in the
1990s.

IIP-Owned~~~ratin9'P'I..nts .

MlY
El Centro Steam Plant..........................~... 265
Yucca Steam Plant ..........,.......................~... As part
of the Avenue 42 Transmission Loop
Project, the substation will also be
modified to accommodate the required
230-kV to 92-kV transformation to serve
its power customers.
lID's expansion projects also include the
repowering of Unit 1 at the EI C<;ntro
Steam Plant. With a planned in-service
date of May 1999, Unit 1 will generate 38
MW of electricity - enough to serve 7,600
residences. Future conversion of this gas-
powered unit to a combined-cycle unit is
expected to generate an additional 14 MW
of energy. .

~

Peak Load
1994 peak demand .............,......... 619 MW

Power

Miles of Line

Miles
1,290
342

Transmission lines .........................
Subtransmission lines ....................
Distribution lines
Overhead & underground ...........

3,382

Customers
(As of February 1995)
Residential ............. ........ ...... .......
Commercial & Industrial............
Agricultural (pumping) ...............

Other ...........................................

Total customers ..................

Meters
69,940
11,650
998
1,492
84,080

@ liD uses recycled paper

1995

lID entered the power ~usiness in
1936.
