These two sites were then presented at a public meeting on February 13, 2006 where the
advantages and disadvantages of each site were debated. Following input from the public,
the Division of Wildlife, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers it was decided, by the
Animas River Task Force, to recommend to the City that improvements be made at the
Smelter Boating Park. It was also recommended that improvements at this site be extended
downstream to include additional structures that are of a similar nature to those proposed at
the Schneider site. The design shown in this report represents the current design at the
Smelter Boating Park, which has been renamed the Durango Boating Park.
