was shown that an appreciable amount of precipitation occurred
in the Salt River drainage under negative Vn conditions (i.e.,
wind flow from a northwesterly direction). Therefore, a fourth
modeling simulation was made for northwesterly flow (BALDYNW).
All four .locations cross the Mogollon Rim. Crest heights
vary from over 11,400 feet (3480 m) for the two seeding simulations
crossing Baldy Peak to 8650 feet (2640 m) for PRESWIN and
to 7175 feet (2IBO .m) for SALTRVR.

Vertical cross-sections for the four locations are shown
in Figures 3.5 through 3.8 for PRESWIN, SALTRVR, BALDY, and
BALDYNW, respectively. The figures also show selected meteoro-
logical values used for model input (in these cases being
within the optimum, stable criteria).

3.2.1 Modelinq Results for the Verde River (PRESWIN)
Results of the model simulations for the Verde River drainage
(PRESWIN cross-section) are listed in Table 3.1. Ground-based
seeding atop Mt. Union (near Prescott) resulted in increases
in precipitation in the Verde River drainage when the atmosphere
was stable. The increases were much larger under convective
conditions. The PRESWIN terrain profile was then altered
to simulate seeding at Prescott instead of Mt. Union. The
results showed no increases in the Verde River drainage with
stable flow. Therefore, a remotely-controlled mountain-top
seeder or an aircraft appears necessary to affect stable storms
in the Verde River drainage. Seeding under stable conditions
at the towns of Cherry and McGuireville produced no increases,
as the vertical dispersion of the seeding plume was too restricted.
In these cases, the vertical dispersion of the seeding plume
was very limited. as it passed over the Mogollon Rim. Seeding
at Cherry under more convective conditions resulted in good
increases along the Mogollon Rim. However, many of the seeding-

3-13
