Recreation Engineering and Planning
ìç÷úðíåôóè÷åûè÷êìû êñøûïê÷ïíæûð
COMPLETED:
Before
SPRING 2005
Fish passage and whitewa-
ter play park, designed in
the Arkansas river to
improve habitat, eliminate
an in - stream hazard and
create a tourist attraction
for a variety of residents
Lowhead dams — once the scourge of whitewater boaters — are now becoming
and visitors
home to a new type of whitewater park. The Pueblo Whitewater Park originally
featured a 14 foot diversion dam in a floodway. The area was not only an eyesore, it
was not passable to watercraft or fish and represented a threat to public safety.
REP worked with the City of Pueblo and the US Army Corps of Engineers on a
section 206 project to transform this denuded and channelized section of the Ar-
kansas River into a park accessible to residents and visitors interested in a variety of
outdoor recreational activities, from walking and jogging to tubing, wading, and
kayaking.
The finished park includes eight drop structures that distribute the drop of the
original dam throughout a 1400 feet of length. Each drop creates a unique white-
water feature suitable for recreational kayaking, and allows fish to migrate up-
stream. The seven large pools created in the project serve both as fish habitat and
recovery areas for boaters.
x x
Worked with the Army Corps of Provided all in - stream design and
Engineers on this unique project construction inspection services
designed to both enhance tourism and
x
Project maintains previous
improve fish habitat
functionality as both a power plant
x
Eight separate drop structures
diversion and a floodway
Contact:
Scott Hobson
After
Senior Land Use Planner
Department of Planning and
Development
211 E. “D” St.
PO Box 1427
Pueblo, Colorado, 81003
719 - 543 - 6006
Phone:
303 - 545 - 5883
Fax:
303 - 545 - 5883
E - mail:
recreational -
engineering@comcast.net
