Water Supply Reserve Account - Grant Application Form
Fonn Revised May 2007

a) Project Area Description and map

WSRA funding, if awarded, will be applied primarily at Lake Pueblo State Park in Pueblo County Colorado in the
Arkansas Basin. The research and education components of the grant budget would be applied statewide at other state
parks with reservoirs. This would provide for sampling and early detection of zebra mussels as well public education.

Pueblo reservoir occupies the majority of Lake Pueblo State Park and was constructed between 1970 and 1974 as
part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas project. The project involves a trans-basin diversion from the Fryingpan River to
the Arkansas River and consists of six storage dams and reservoirs, of which Pueblo Reservoir is the largest. The
reservoir was built for a variety of reasons, the most important being irrigation. However, flood control,
municipal water, recreation, and fish and wildlife habitat were also reasons for its construction (USDI-BOR
1981). The Arkansas River provides most of the reservoir's water, however, Bogg's, Rock, Peck, and Turkey
Creeks and several unnamed intermittent drainages (Von Loh et al. 1995) also contribute. The total volume of
the reservoir is 357,700 acre-feet when filled to its maximum level at an elevation of 4,898 feet.

ti
...

\-""t'
.~. .!II

~e
Colorado S1ate Parks

D Park Boulldary Rivers
_ State Wildlife Areas - Roads

::::J lakes Interstate

..J
T"

Lake Pueblo State Park

2
,r~il~,

11
