Finally, data from two NASA research aircraft flights
were processed and analyzed, and a technique for distinguishing between ice and water cloud
regions, using downward-looking near-infrared spectrometer measurements, is described.
The structure of this Final Report is as follows. Section 2 describes instrumentation,
calibration procedures, data reduction and data processing. Section 3 gives a description of each
Storm Period that occurred during the 1991 field program, including the temporal distribution
of SL W, the synoptic features that affected the research area, the temporal evolution of various
meteorological parameters at the high altitude Utah/NOAA field site, and examples of radar and
satellite data for each Storm Period. Section 4 provides the results of the comphrehensive
analysis of SLW over the Wasatch Plateau, including frequency distributions, SLW fluxes and
precipitation totals, stratification of SL W by synoptic features and meteorological parameters,
stratification of SL W depth by location on the Plateau, and discussion of many implications
based on the individual fmdings. Section 5 provides an example of the NASA ER-2 A VIRIS
data and compares it with NOAA King Air data and ground-based remote sensing data. Section
6 summarizes the main findings and offers conclusions and recommendations based on these
fmdings.
Three Appendicies provide data plots which were too numerous to include in the main
body of this report. Appendix A contains time versus height prof1les of sounding data for
selected Storm Periods. Appendix B is the reproduction of a paper presented at the 1992
Weather Modification Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia, which describes the DR! mobile
radiometer and presents data from individual mobile experiments. Finally, Appendix C provides
plots of all mobile radiometer experiments from the 1991 field program.

1-3
