The objective of the research flights was to study the precipitation
processes on both~he Uinta Range and Wasatch Range to determine whether
a seeding potential exists, and if a seeding potential existed, to
determine whether the operational seeding program was effectively seeding
these storms.
In order to examine the operational seeding program, it was important
that our efforts did not affect the operational efforts. Consequently, we
specifically did not provide NAWC with much realtime or neartime information
on our results or impressions of the clouds. We did inform them of our
fl ight plans and discussed the synoptic situation with them prior to each
flight. Other than on the one day (1 Apr 1978) when we directed the ground
seeding operation, we detected no indications that our studies and discus-
sions with NAWC significantly affected their operations.
The K/A was flown on 13 research missions during four storms. Nine
of these fl ights were over the Uinta Range and four were over the Wasatch
Range. The storms and flight missions are summarized in Table 1.1.1.
