July were included, since the colder cloud base temperatures in May

were generally not representative of the later parts of the season or

of the body of the data on which our conclusions have been based.} The

med i an cloud base temperature in thi s data set was 4. oOe, while the

average was 4.6t4.40e. The median pressure at cloud base was 730 rob, a

pressure that was typically about 2 km AGL.

Fig. 2.2 shows a comparison of the distributions from the

indi vidual years. The median value in 1978 was 6.80e, while the median

value in 1979 and 1980 was 3.70e. However, the spread in measurements

is great, and the proportion of measurements wanner than oOe is

actually higher in the 1979-80 data set than in the 1978 data set.

There does not appear to be an important difference in cloud base

temperature among the years. This is surprising since Schemenauer et

100
- 80
~
0
-
UJ 60
>
l-
e:(
...J
:::> 40
::!:
:::>
u
20
0'
-10 -5 0 5 10 15
CLOUD BASE TEMPERATURE (OC)

Fig. 2.2: The percentage of the measurements of cloud base temperature
that were colder than the indicated values for 1978, 1979 and 1980.

5
