.

CHAPTER 1: IN'l'ROIXCl'ION

.

.

This is the final report to the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation from

the University of Wyoming, Department of Atmospheric Science, under

contract 7-07-83-VOOOl (HIPLEX). This contract provided for field

operations during the sumners of 1977-1981, and supported analyses

within the HIPLEX program.

The preceding annual reports have contained extensive

documentation of the data collected, and have included detailed case

studies. Those reports have intentionally remained quite close to the

data, and in most cases have avoided unwarranted generalization. The

intent in this report is, to synthesize conclusions from those case

studies, and to emphasize the general features. The extensive

documentation in the annual reports will be referenced frequently, but

for economy of presentation only essential portions of the data will be

presented here.

The acquisition and instrumentation of the Super King Air, N2UW,

was a major effort under this contract, and subsequent efforts to keep

the instrumentation and data system up-to-date have required constant

attention. However, because an extensive discussion of the aircraft,

the data system, and the instrumentation is available (Cooper, 1978a),

and because each of the annual reports has discussed various aspects of

the efforts to evaluate the instrumentation, no further discussion of

this topic is included in this final report. The 1977 annual report

contains a particularly complete description of the measurements, and

.

.

1
