information on where SLW is likely to be found relative to storm stage and how

SLW is influenced by orography and mesoscale phenomena. The microwave radiometer

has been an important tool in these investigations, and in 1991 the Utah/NOAA

Program used two of these instruments to 1) constantly monitor SLW at the top of

the Plateau, and 2) measure SLW across and along the Plateau using a mobile

radiometer platform. The DRI work dealt with modifying its radiometer to operate
in a mobile mode, and performing mobile data collection experiments during the
field program. Specific experiments are described in the Operations Plan. The
measurements should add significantly to our knowledge of how SLW is orographi-
cally distributed and how efficiently it is depleted by natural precipitation
processes. Synoptic, satellite and rawinsonde data will be the primary tools
used to evaluate the meteorological factors that control SLW evolution.
Data collected by the 1991 project aircraft, which will be incorporated

into the studies of SLW, have been described by Heimbach (1991). Also, data from

the stationary radiometer, which was operated by the United States Bureau of

Reclamation (USBR), will be incorporated into the liquid water analysis. This

report describes the operations and data from the Desert Research Institute dua1-

frequency mobile radiometer, as well as the status of the rawinsonde data that

were collected by UDWR personnel, and data that were archived using the pc-McIDAS

data retrieval system at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada.

Some preliminary analyses of mobile radiometer data, which were presented

at the 1991 Weather Modification Association Meeting, are included in Appendix

A. In addition, a paper published during 1991 which covers analysis of Doppler

radar data from the 1985 Utah/NOAA field program appears in Appendix B.

2

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
