As this will be the last year of intensive field operations, significant modi-
fications to the conduct of seeding will be made. A major emphasis will be
placed on the application of ground seeding utilizing the ground generator
networks of SMUD, PG&E, DRI and six manual generators to be installed by NAWC
(North Ameri can Weather Consu 1 tants), to target both the ARB, the Tahoe-
Truckee Basin and the upper reaches of the Mokelumne. Ground seeding opera-
tions will not be combined with aircraft seeding so that evaluation techniques
can determine the effectiveness of each delivery method separately. The fixed
target experiment (Bureau of Reclamation, 1985) will be continued this season
and will be executed when the randomization for ground seeding is a no-seed.
The conduct of the fixed target experiment will be modified slightly to accom-
modate a different aircraft delivery system. Emphasis will be placed on
studying the transport, diffusion and activation of AgI nuclei from both
ground and airborne delivery systems. Also, other basins within northern
California will be investigated for their seeding potential. This will expand
on the types of flights flown over the Feather River over the last two field
seasons and will encompass two other potentially seedable basins.

The facilities available for the 1986-87 field experiment include (see figure
1-1. ) :
1. a field office at Auburn including a complete weather office and a
computer facility.
2. a cloud physics aircraft and a cloud seeding aircraft, both based at
McClellan AFB.
3. a 5 cm radar/rawinsonde station at Sheridan.
4. A ground observatory at Kingvale equipped with a Ka-band radar provided
by DRI, a dual-channel scanning microwave radiometer, rawinsonde, micro-
physics observatory, devices for DRI snow chemistry and stable isotope

1-4

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
